Joel and Ellie have got a lot more than just clicker problems in our first big look at The Last of Us season 2.

To celebrate “Outbreak Day”—the anniversary of the apocalyptic viral outbreak in Naughty Dog’s beloved game series—HBO has released our first major extended look at the second season of The Last of Us. The new trailer picks up five years after the events of season one, and sees both Joel and Ellie struggling to open up after the years have slowly pulled them apart. But the apocalypse has little time for conflict resolution when there’s all kinds of ugly threats from their past coming back to haunt the duo… and that’s even before you get to more clickers than we’ve ever seen on the show before. Aside from teasing a few iconic moments from The Last of Us Part II, the trailer gives us a few more intriguing looks at Catherine O’Hara’s new character, acting as a counsellor of sorts for Joel, as well as some familiar faces from Part II making their live-action debut, like Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina ( Ellie’s new love interest), and Young Mazino as Jesse. Some of those familiar faces are more literal than others too, with Jeffrey Wright also appearing to reprise his role as Isaac from the game. Further cast for the season includes Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and the returning Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley as Tommy and Maria, respectively. Just how much season two will get into the events of Part II remains to be seen—as does how much it dances around the big shifts that the game brought to The Last of Us‘ world and characters. For now, the show’s keeping things pretty close to its chest, but there is at least a little element of it knowing that you know things aren’t exactly going to get better for anyone involved in this apocalyptic tale any time soon. The Last of Us season two is expected to hit HBO and Max some time in the first half of 2025. In the meantime, check out three new posters below, featuring Joel, Ellie, and Abby.   Want more io9 news? The cryptocurrency community is not amused.

Steven Universe, Regular Show, and more were found absent from Max following updates to the streamer’s library today.

HBO is said to be eyeing either Aaron Pierre or Stephan James to co-star in the upcoming series.

The long-delayed Stephen King adaptation from Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, The Nun, It) arrives on Max October 3.
