HBO is said to be eyeing either Aaron Pierre or Stephan James to co-star in the upcoming series.

Following the reported casting of Godzilla: King of the Monsters star Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in DC Comics’ upcoming Lanterns series, HBO has reportedly narrowed it down to two actors for the role of John Stewart. According to Deadline, Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (21 Bridges) are the two actors in the running to play the fan-favorite lantern. As with Deadline’s previous report that Chandler was cast as Jordan, its report of Pierre and James being the final candidates to play Stewart isn’t a surefire thing. Neither actor has been given a formal offer, and HBO has yet to confirm the rumor. Nevertheless, what we do know for sure about Lanterns is its logline and the folks behind the show. For starters, Lanterns counts among its executive producers Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic writer Tom King. Its story sees recruit John Stewart and Green Lantern legend Hal Jordan at the heart of an intergalactic investigation on Earth. Regarding the tone Lanterns is going for, the Hollywood Reporter describes the series as “having a gritty, True Detective vibe” that sees Jordan mentor a reluctant and young Stewart through their ongoing investigation as its Earth-bound murder mystery expands beyond our atmosphere.
