Following two defeats against New Zealand and Australia, respectively, the women in blue failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup for the very first time since 2016. Amid these setbacks, team captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s position has come under scrutiny. As India faced Australia to increase their odds to enter the semis, the skipper’s performance was heavily criticised despite being the top scorer (54) of the match. Her performance fell short in the last overs as she continued to bat slowly when the required run rate was above 10 per over. Interestingly, Harmanpreet, who hit six fours during her innings, couldn’t continue her pace and failed to take more risks in the last overs. However, the 35-year-old had still reduced the target to 14 runs in the final over, but the team ended up falling short by nine runs, leading to Australia’s victory. No boundaries were hit in the last over as the team captain continued to opt for singles, resulting in a total score of 142/9. This loss has led to the team again failing to achieve an ICC title in women’s cricket and could make some heads turn at BCCI about Harmanpreet’s role. As per the reports, before the three-match ODI against New Zealand starting next week in Ahmedabad, the BCCI, which considers the team is in need of a transition, is set to meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to consider a new captain for team India. “The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything that the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead,” a BCCI source stated. (Photo by Fiona Goodall-ICC/ICC via Getty Images) Harmanpreet was selected as full-time team captain of the T20 team after Mithali Raj stepped down from the role in 2016. Earlier, Raj, who is considered one of the greatest female cricketers of all time, also shared her opinion on the change of captaincy: “It’s up to BCCI and the selectors to take a call, but if they are looking to change, this would be the ideal time because if you delay more, then we have another World Cup on the horizon (two years). If you are not doing it now, then don’t do it later. Then it is too close to the World Cup,” she said in an interview. As per the 41-year-old, batter Smriti Mandhana can be considered for the role as she has been the vice captain for India since long. However, personally, Raj considers Jemimah Rodrigues ideal for the role. As per her, the all-rounder’s young age (24) can help the team serve “longer in the T20’s.” One Community. Many Voices.
